Dr. Burgess is also a specialist in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. She was among the first in her field to apply this technique to her practice. She has had years of extensive training in the use of EMDR and continues to apply this method to treat numerous issues and concerns.
In addition, Dr. Burgess is an expert in the field of couples counseling and group therapy. She was the Director of Group Therapy in the Student Health Center at San Francisco City College where, for 17 years, she led over one hundred (100) therapy groups. She was a primary clinical supervisor for post-doctoral candidates serving internships at the college. She was also an instructor on the college campus, where she taught four courses based upon her book.
In 2002, Dr. Burgess wrote her book, “How To Grow A Second Skin For Your Soul: For Those Who Feel Hurt, Judged, Criticized, Abandoned, Invalidated, When Someone Else Acts Like A Jerk” which was published by the Oaklea Press in Virginia. It became an Amazon.com top 100 best-seller. Articles about her book and expertise have appeared in national magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Men’s Edge and Family Doctor. She has been interviewed on twenty- four (24) national radio shows including Cable Radio Network, Boston’s Jordan Rich Show, KGO’s Joanie Greggain’s Show and Bonnie Colleen’s “Seeing Beyond.” Her book tour included numerous appearances and lectures given at various Borders Book Stores, New Living Expositions and academic institutes in northern California. Over the years, Dr. Burgess has conducted a total of ten (10), three-day retreats and numerous workshops and therapy groups based upon the principles set forth in her book. These didactic and experiential workshops bridge the topics of meditation, metaphysics, spirituality and psychology and expand upon the principles set forth in her book. The workshops give participants the opportunity to practice the tools and techniques and integrate the concepts into their daily lives.
Dr. Burgess graduated with Honors and Distinction in psychology from The University of California at Berkeley. She received her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from The California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley/Alameda. Her doctoral dissertation and undergraduate honor's thesis focussed on the topic of bulimia. As a San Francisco psychologist, she is a member of the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychologists.
Dr. Burgess is also a graduate from the Berkeley Psychic Institute in Berkeley, California, where she received extensive training in meditation, metaphysics and the healing arts. She has conducted numerous workshops and weekend retreats, bridging metaphysical, spiritual and psychological topics. Dr. Burgess brings 23 years of clinical experience and spiritual training to her work.
